Meaning of WASHOE in English

county, northwestern Nevada, U.S., stretching north-south in a narrow band along the California border from Oregon (north) to Lake Tahoe (south). Reno (the county seat) and other populated areas, as well as Washoe Lake and a large segment of the Toiyabe National Forest, are sited in the far southwestern corner of the county. The south is also crossed by Steamboat Creek, Steamboat Ditch, Truckee River, and their several tributaries. Most of the county northward is arid, mountainous (including the Granite and Hays Canyon ranges), and sparsely populated. The large Pyramid Lake is near the centre of the county, surrounded by the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation. The county was organized in 1861. Economic activities centre mainly on the gaming and recreation associated with Reno, Sparks, and Lake Tahoe, though there is some mining and agriculture. Area 6,342 square miles (16,427 square km). Pop. (1990) 254,667.
