WILD CUCUMBER

also called Balsam Apple (species Echinocystis lobata), climbing plant of the gourd family (Cucurbitaceae), native to eastern North America. The true balsam apple is Momordica balsamina. The wild cucumber has three to seven sharply lobed leaves; forked, coiled tendrils; six-petaled white flowers; and a fleshy, oval, four-seeded fruit that is covered with prickles. It is frequently planted to cover arbors and fences.
