city, seat (1862) of Yolo county, central California, U.S., in the Sacramento Valley. Founded in 1853 by Henry Wyckoff, it was first known as Yolo City; the present name, suggested by its location in a grove of oak trees, was adopted in 1859 when the first post office was opened. Woodland is a trading, shipping, and processing centre for a large agricultural area producing beet sugar, vegetables, fruit, rice, and olive oil. Light manufactures include plastics, mobile homes, and farm machinery. Inc. 1874. Pop. (1990) 39,802.
