public, coeducational institution of higher learning in Laramie, Wyo., U.S. It is a land-grant university, comprising colleges of Agriculture, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, and Law and the Graduate School. The university offers programs leading to about 15 undergraduate and graduate degrees in over 120 major study fields and to a professional degree in law. There are several university extension centres throughout the state, including a branch in Casper, the Casper College Center. The University of Wyoming/National Park Service Research Center operates a field station in Grand Teton National Park. Campus facilities include two herbariums, a veterinary laboratory, and the Institute for Environmental and Natural Resource Research and Policy. Total enrollment is approximately 12,000. The university was founded in 1886; it is a land-grant institution under the provisions of the Morrill Act of 1862. Instruction began in 1887. The campus is home to the Geological Museum, the Anthropology Museum, and the American Heritage Center, which combine to give a detailed portrait of the history and prehistory of the Rocky Mountain region. Industrial consultant W. Edwards Deming was an alumnus of the University of Wyoming.
