I . Alan Bennett
(1934–)
a writer and actor, well known for his humorous yet sympathetic plays, especially on television, about the lives of ordinary people. He first made his name in Beyond the Fringe . His best-known work includes the plays Forty Years On (1968), Habeas Corpus (1973), A Question of Attribution (1991) and The History Boys (2004) as well as the series of television monologues (= plays written for one character) called Talking Heads (1988 and 1998).
II . Arnold Bennett
(1867–1931)
an English writer of novels, most of which are set in the Potteries and describe the life of working people in great detail. His best-known works are Anna of the Five Towns (1902) and the Clayhanger series (1902–8).
III . Richard Rodney Bennett
(1936– )
an English composer, best known for his operas The Mines of Sulphur (1965) and Victory (1970) and for his music for several films. He was made a knight in 1998.
