Meaning of BEWICK in English

(1753–1828)

an English artist who worked mainly in book illustrations. He brought a new realistic style to the art of engraving (= cutting or carving designs on metal, stone, etc.). He is especially famous for his pictures of animals and birds. His best-known works are A General History of Quadrupeds (1790) and the History of British Birds in two volumes (1797–1804).
