a British actor and director who has worked successfully both in the theatre and in films. He is especially well known for his versions of Shakespeare’s plays. He was married to Emma Thompson and they appeared together in several films. His best-known films (as both actor and director) include Henry V (1989), Much Ado About Nothing (1993), Hamlet (1997) and Love’s Labour’s Lost (2000).
