a small country in south-east Asia, on the north coast of Borneo. It has been influenced and protected by Britain since 1888, and became a member of the Commonwealth in 1984. It produces large amounts of oil and gas, and its ruler, the Sultan of Brunei, is one of the richest people in the world.
