I . George Burns
(1896–1996)
a US comedian who continued to perform until he was nearly 100. He was known for his large cigar, slow talk and humorous singing. He joined his wife, Gracie Allen (1906–64), on stage, in films and on radio and television. He received an Oscar as ‘Best Supporting Actor’ for The Sunshine Boys (1975) and played God in Oh, God! (1977) and two later films.
II . Robert Burns
(1759–96)
a Scottish poet, often referred to as Robbie (or Rabbie) Burns. He wrote many poems and songs in English, and in the dialect of Lowland Scotland, about love, the countryside, the life of working people, and his love of Scotland. He is regarded as Scotland’s national poet and his poems and songs, such as Tam o’ Shanter and Auld Lang Syne , are widely known.
