a US singer and actor. Her original name was Cherilyn Sarkisian La Piere. She was married to the singer Sonny Bono and, as Sonny and Cher, they made a number of successful records, including I’ve Got You, Babe (1965) and The Beat Goes On (1967). Cher won a Grammy award for Believe (1998) and an Oscar for her part in the film Moonstruck (1987) and her other films have included Silkwood (1983) and, for television, If These Walls Could Talk (1996).
