Meaning of COMMON LAW in English

( in England ) law which has developed from old customs and from past decisions made by judges, i.e. not created by Parliament. A common law wife/husband is a person with whom a man or woman has lived for some time as a wife or husband, although the couple are not legally married. Such relationships are recognized by the law in some countries but not in the UK.
