COMMON LAND


Meaning of COMMON LAND in English

( in Britain ) land that belongs to or may be used by the whole community, especially in a village. Most areas of common land have been used for keeping sheep or cows on or for other purposes for many centuries. With the ‘enclosures’ of the 18th and 19th centuries much common land was taken by private owners but the remaining areas have been protected by law since 1852.
