the 30th US President (1923–9). He was known for his honesty and called ‘Silent Cal’ because he used few words when speaking. He was a Republican (1), and had previously been Governor of Massachusetts (1919–20) and US Vice-president (1921–3). The US economy did well under Coolidge, and he signed the Kellogg Pact to encourage international peace.
