Meaning of COVENANTER in English

any of a group of 17th–century Scottish Presbyterians who supported two Covenants (1638 and 1643). These were formal statements defending Presbyterianism and protesting against the religious policies of Charles I , who wanted to set up a Scottish Church with bishops, like the Church of England . The Covenanters supported Parliament in the English Civil War .
