the director of the British Royal Ballet (1988–2001). He joined the Royal Ballet as a dancer in 1961 and often danced with Antoinette Sibley in roles created for them by Frederick Ashton . In the 1970s he also worked with the American Ballet Theatre in New York. He was made a knight in 1995.
