ESQ

Meaning of ESQ in English

( especially in Britain ) the short form of the word ‘Esquire’, sometimes still written after a man’s name on an envelope instead of ‘Mr’ before it, e.g. ‘Charles Lewis, Esq’. This used to be the polite way to address something written to a man, but it is now very old-fashioned. Most people now write ‘Mr Charles Lewis’ or simply ‘Charles Lewis’.
