Meaning of FAWKES in English

(1570–1606)

one of the people involved in the Gunpowder Plot to blow up the British Houses of Parliament (2). He is the most famous of the conspirators (= people involved in the plan) because he was caught with the gunpowder (= explosive powder), tortured until he gave the names of the others, and later killed. There is a tradition in Britain of burning ‘guys’ representing him every year on Guy Fawkes Night .
