an English artist. He is well known for his sculptures, especially his bas-reliefs (= sculptures in which the design sticks out only slightly from its background) such as his Stations of the Cross (1914–18) in Westminster Cathedral and the carving of Prospero and Ariel on the front of the BBC building. He was a calligrapher (= someone who practises beautiful handwriting that you do with a special pen or brush) and also created several new typefaces (= styles for printing letters in books, magazines, etc.), of which the most famous is Gill Sans.
