( Rutherford Birchard Hayes 1822–93)
the 19th US President (1877–81). He was a Republican who ended Reconstruction in the southern states. He had been a US officer in the Civil War and a lawyer. Hayes was elected President by one vote of the Electoral College . He had previously been elected to the US House of Representatives (1865–7) and was governor of Ohio (1868–72 and 1876–7). His wife was called ‘Lemonade Lucy’ because she would not allow alcohol in the White House (1).
