born March 23, 1933, Akron, Ohio, U.S. born June 29, 1936, Akron American figure-skating brothers who won successive Olympic gold medals, Hayes at the 1956 Winter Games in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, and David at the 1960 Games in Squaw Valley, California, U.S. Both known for their precision and strength in the compulsory figures and their fluid artistic expression, the Jenkins brothers dominated American figure skating from 1953 until 1960. Hayes was undefeated in major competition for four years, won the U.S. and world championships from 1953 through 1956, and capped off his amateur career with an Olympic gold medal. Similarly, David medaled in 14 major championships from 1956 to 1960. These include U.S., North American, and world titles in 1957, 1958, and 1959, a bronze medal at the 1956 Olympics, a silver medal at the 1960 world championships, and a gold medal at the 1960 Olympics. During the peak years of their skating success, both Hayes and David completed degrees from Colorado College in Colorado Springs. In 1960 Hayes married Carol Heiss, the women's gold medalist in skating at the Squaw Valley Olympics, and received a law degree from Harvard University. David went on to become a doctor with a specialty in internal medicine.
