I . Patty Hearst
(1954– )
the granddaughter of William Randolph Hearst who was kidnapped (= taken away by force) in 1974 by a group called the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA). They demanded that her father give food to the poor. She then joined the SLA and robbed two banks with them before being arrested. She went to prison and was released in 1979.
II . William Randolph Hearst
(1863–1951)
a very rich American who owned newspapers, magazines, radio stations and two film companies. He used yellow journalism in his newspapers to increase their sales. His New York Journal competed fiercely in the 1890s with the New York World , owned by Joseph Pulitzer, and both encouraged the Spanish-American War to help sales. Hearst built the castle of San Simeon as his home in California . Orson Welles based his film Citizen Kane on Hearst’s life.
