I . Houston
the fourth largest US city and the largest in Texas , named after Sam Houston . It is a financial, commercial, cultural and industrial centre, especially for the oil industry. The city is also a major port connected to the Gulf of Mexico by the Houston Ship Canal. It has two major universities, Rice University and the University of Houston, and the Lyndon B Johnson Space Center is also there.
II . Sam Houston
(1793–1863)
a US military and political leader. He helped Texas gain its independence from Mexico, defeating the Mexican army at the Battle of San Jacinto . Houston became the first President of the Republic of Texas, and after Texas became a state he represented it as a US Senator (1846–59). He was also elected Governor of Texas but was forced to leave the job because he did not want Texas to join the Confederate States .
III . Whitney Houston
(1963– )
a US singer of popular music and actor. She has won Grammy awards for several songs, including Saving All My Love for You (1985), I Wanna Dance with Somebody (1987) and I Will Always Love You (1993). Her films include The Bodyguard (1993), Waiting to Exhale (1995), The Preacher’s Wife (1997) and Cinderella (1997), a multicultural version of the fairy story made for TV.
