Meaning of JUDICIAL ACTIVISM in English

( in the US legal system ) the idea that the Supreme Court or other courts can approve new laws which do not follow the exact words of the American Constitution but are based on changes in the nation’s values and needs. This is also called a ‘broad construction’ of the Constitution. Judicial activism is the opposite of judicial restraint .
