two young Americans, Nathan Leopold Junior (1904–71) and Richard Loeb (1905–31), who killed 14-year-old Bobby Franks in 1924. They were from rich Chicago families and wanted to commit the perfect murder. This ‘thrill killing’ shocked America. Because of the skill of their lawyer, Clarence Darrow , they were not condemned to death, but were sent to prison for ‘life and 99 years’. Loeb was killed in prison but Leopold was released in 1958 and went to live in Puerto Rico .
