an English author and critic. He is known especially for his humorous books about life in Britain’s universities, such as Changing Places (1975), Small World (1984) and Nice Work (1988), some of which have been made into successful television series. He taught English at Birmingham University, the model for the ‘Rummidge’ in his novels. Later works include Therapy (1995), Thinks... (2001) and Author, Author (2004), a novel about the middle years of Henry James . He has also written serious literary criticism.
