1. ( in England and Wales ) a man or woman elected every year by other councillors as head of the council in a town, city or borough . The mayor performs official duties, such as attending public ceremonies, entertaining visitors to the area or opening new buildings. He or she does not have much political power. The equivalent person in Scotland is called a provost . The Mayor of London is elected by the people of London at the same time as the London Assembly and makes decisions for London as a whole. 2. ( in the US ) the head of the local government of a town or city, elected by the people living there. US mayors usually belong to one of the two main political parties and often have a lot of political power.
