a novel (1818) by Jane Austen in which a romantic young woman, Catherine Morland, falls in love with a young priest, Henry Tilney. His father believes she is rich and invites her to the family’s home, Northanger Abbey. Catherine imagines that the house contains all kinds of terrible secrets. The father discovers that she has no money, and orders her to leave, but she marries Henry in the end. The book was written as a satire on the type of Gothic novel that was popular at the time.
