(1940– )
an English theatre director who helped to run the Royal Shakespeare Company from 1968 to 1987. He has also produced three of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musicals in London and some opera at Glyndebourne . He was director of the National Theatre from 1996 to 2002. He was made a knight in 2002.
