a series of scientific and other projects in 16 countries involving 400 young people from 27 countries and a British sailing ship, Eye of the Wind , as a floating base. It was started by Prince Charles and lasted for two years (1978–80), during which the ship sailed completely round the world, as Sir Francis Drake had done 400 years before. It was followed in 1980 by Operation Raleigh, which then developed into a regular international event for young people. The events and the charity that organizes them are now known as Raleigh International .
