a US singer and writer of rockabilly songs which combined country music with rock and roll . His first hit, Blue Suede Shoes (1956), was later recorded by Elvis Presley . His songs have also been recorded by country music singers like Johnny Cash and by various pop groups, including the Beatles . He was chosen for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
