one of the first African-American actors to play important film roles. He won an Oscar for his part in Lilies of the Field (1963) and received another for lifetime achievement in 2002. His other films have included Blackboard Jungle (1955), Porgie and Bess (1959), Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967), In the Heat of the Night (1967), The Wilby Conspiracy (1975) and The Day of the Jackal (1997).
