any one of a group of late 19th-century British painters who worked in a style influenced by Italian painting of the period before Raphael. The group included John Everett Millais , Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Holman Hunt (who formed what they called the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood ). Other artists associated with the group included William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones . Their subjects were usually from literature or the Bible, and were painted in bright colours with realistic detail.
