I . Ralph Richardson

(1902–83)

an English actor on stage, in films and on television. His early career was spent in the theatre, playing leading parts in plays by Chekhov, Ibsen and Shakespeare , and he was made a knight in 1947. Later he appeared in works by modern writers, including J B Priestley and Harold Pinter . His many films included Richard III (1956), The Bed Sitting Room (1969) and O Lucky Man! (1973).

II . Samuel Richardson

(1689–1761)

an English author best known for his novels Pamela (1740) and Clarissa (1748). They are among the first novels in English literature, and are written in the form of letters between the characters. Both novels contain strong messages about the importance of sexual morals, and were extremely successful when first published.
