a character in a book of the same name by Daniel Defoe , published in 1719. Crusoe is left alone on an island after his ship sinks, and uses his few possessions to survive there. He is helped by Man Friday , a man who becomes Crusoe’s faithful servant after Crusoe saves him from death. The book was based on a true story and is often considered to be the first English novel.
