a US music producer and record company owner, best known for his work in rap and heavy metal . He founded the Def Jam record label in 1984 with Russell Simmons and produced records by bands including the Beastie Boys and Run DMC. In 1998 he left Def Jam to form the Def American record label, which later became American Recordings.
