a leading US opera singer with a soprano (= highest female) voice. Her first major performance was in 1947 with the Philadelphia Civic Opera. She was later General Director of the New York City Opera (1979–84) and Chairwoman of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (1994–2000).
