I . Clive Sinclair

(1940– )

an English inventor and businessman. He became successful in 1972 when he produced Britain’s first pocket calculator. He has developed many other successful electronic products including computers, televisions and the Zike (a new type of bicycle), but his most famous invention was his first failure, the Sinclair C5 , a small electric vehicle with three wheels. It was introduced in 1985 but very few people bought it. Sinclair was made a knight in 1983.

II . Upton Sinclair

(1878–1968)

a US writer of novels and other books intended to improve conditions in society. The first and best-known of these, The Jungle (1906), was about the terrible conditions in the Chicago meat industry, and it resulted in new laws being passed. One of his later novels, Dragon’s Teeth (1942), won the Pulitzer Prize .
