SPENCER

Meaning of SPENCER in English

(1891–1959)

an English artist. He is most famous for his unusual religious paintings, especially the series of pictures of Christ appearing at Cookham, the small town on the River Thames west of London where he was born. His style has been described as ‘primitive realism’, because many of his paintings look like the work of an artist who has had no formal training and has tried to paint in a realistic style. He was made a knight in 1958.
