Meaning of STOCKS in English

n [ pl ]

a device used for punishing criminals in Britain from the 13th century to the 19th century. It was a wooden framework with holes for the feet, and sometimes also for the hands. Criminals were locked into the stocks in public places so that people could laugh at them, insult them and sometimes throw things at them.
