He received the Pulitzer Prize for The Confessions of Nat Turner (1967), which some people criticized for its violent story based on the murders committed by the African-American slave Nat Turner . Styron’s other novels include Lie Down in Darkness (1951) and Sophie’s Choice (1979), which became a successful film (1982).
