a US tennis player who was the leading player in the world during the 1920s. His popular name was ‘Big Bill’. In 1920 he became the first American to win at Wimbledon , and he also won there in 1921 and 1930. He won the US Open (1) seven times (1920–5 and 1929) and played in 11 Davis Cup teams.
