Meaning of VAUGHAN WILLIAMS in English

(1872–1958)

a popular English composer. He was influenced mainly by traditional English music, especially of the Tudor (1) period, and his work often suggests English life and traditions and the English countryside. His best-known short pieces include Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis (1910) and The Lark Ascending (1914). He also wrote several works for orchestra, as well as songs, operas and film music. He was made a member of the Order of Merit in 1935.
