a US writer of novels and short stories, known for his dark humour. He was especially popular among American college and university students in the 1960s and 1970s. His best-known novel is Slaughterhouse Five (1969), about the bombing of Dresden, Germany, during World War II , which Vonnegut saw as a prisoner of war there. His other books include Cat’s Cradle (1963), Galapagos (1985), Hocus Pocus (1990) and Timequake (1997).
