I . David Foster Wallace

(1962– )

a US writer best known for his satirical novel (= using humour to criticise something), Infinite Jest (1996), about American consumer culture in the near future.

II . Edgar Wallace

(1875–1932)

an English author. His most popular books are stories about crime and adventure, such as The Four Just Men (1905) and The Ringer (1926). He was also a successful writer of plays and films, including the film King Kong (1933).

III . George Wallace

(1919–98)

a US politician. He was governor of the state of Alabama and tried to keep segregation in public schools there in the 1960s.

IV . Lew Wallace

(1827–1905)

a US writer best known for his novel Ben-Hur (1880). He wrote other historical novels, including The Fair God (1873) and Prince of India (1893). Wallace was also a lawyer, a soldier, governor of the New Mexico Territory (1878–81) and a US government representative in Turkey (1881–5).

V . William Wallace

( c. 1270–1305)

a Scottish soldier. He led an army against the English forces of King Edward I , who had occupied Scotland, and defeated them at Stirling Bridge in 1297. The following year Wallace was defeated by Edward at Falkirk, and was later captured and hanged. The film Braveheart (1995) was made about his life.
