( also whiskey ) n [ U ]
a strong alcoholic drink made from cereals. The best-known whisky, made in Scotland, is often called ‘Scotch’, and the best quality of Scotch whisky is ‘single malt’, made in the Highlands from a single type of grain. Many people drink it mixed with water, soda water or soft drinks (= drinks containing no alcohol) such as ginger ale or Coca-Cola , while others prefer to drink it with nothing added, or just ice. Whiskey is the usual spelling for the drink made in Ireland and America.
