an industrial town in Greater Manchester , England. In the Industrial Revolution it had important coal-mining and cotton industries. It is famous today for its Rugby League club, one of the oldest in England and the most successful in the history of the sport. George Orwell’s book The Road to Wigan Pier describes the life of poor people, especially the unemployed miners in the north of England in the 1930s.
