2. the family name of the British royal family since 1917. It was changed from the German Saxe-Coburg-Gotha by George V because of strong British feelings against Germany during World War I .

the title given to Edward VIII after he abdicated (= gave up his right to be king). His wife was given the title of the Duchess of Windsor .
