Meaning of WOLFE in English

I . General James Wolfe

(1726–59)

an English soldier. He is remembered in history for leading the attack on Quebec, Canada, in 1759, and for dying during the battle. His victory there led to France giving up Canada to Britain at the end of the Seven Years War .

II . Nero Wolfe

the detective created by the US writer Rex Stout .

III . Thomas Wolfe

(1900–38)

a US writer whose four long and powerful novels are set in the South and are based on his own life. They are Look Homeward Angel (1929), Of Time and the River (1935), and two published after he died, The Web and the Rock (1939) and You Can’t Go Home Again (1940). Wolfe also wrote short stories.

IV . Tom Wolfe

(1931– )

a US writer, many of whose books are about US popular culture and social life. They include The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test (1968) and the novels The Bonfire of the Vanities (1988) and A Man in Full (1998). Earlier in the 1960s, Wolfe was a leading figure in the ‘New Journalism’ movement, in which facts were written about in the style of fiction. He was a journalist for The Washington Post (1959–62) and The New York Herald-Tribune (1962–6).
