a successful US university basketball manager at UCLA (1948–75). His teams were US National Champions 10 times (1964–5, 1967–73 and 1975), and he was chosen Coach of the Year seven times. The US Basketball Writers Association each year presents the John R Wooden Award to the best US college or university basketball player.
