the observatory (= a building from which to study the stars, weather, etc.) of the University of Chicago in the US. It was built in 1892 at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin , with money given by Charles Yerkes. It contains the world’s largest refracting telescope (= an instrument that uses light rays to make distant objects appear much larger).
